Tips and plain talk

You do not need to become an expert to make good choices about locks. A little understanding goes a long way. These short pieces give you that: how keys are copied, what a lock grade means, when a repair beats a replacement and how to prepare for the unexpected.

What happens if my identification is not convincing enough on the spot?

The work pauses rather than proceeds, and the locksmith helps you find another route: a neighbour or building manager who can confirm you live there, a document on your phone, a family member who can bring paperwork, or completing the check inside after entry when the documents are behind the door. Verification protects you as much as anyone, because the same standard applies to whoever might one day claim to live at your address. Home Lockout Service

This is the third time this door has locked someone out. Is something wrong with the hardware?

It can be. A cylinder that is worn, a strike plate that has shifted, or a latch that no longer seats squarely will all produce repeat lockouts even though the key looks fine. The locksmith checks the alignment of the door and frame, tests how smoothly the latch throws, and looks at wear inside the cylinder before simply letting you back in. If the hardware is the cause, fixing that during the same visit is usually quicker than calling again next month. Business Lockout Service

How long does the extraction usually take?

It depends on how the piece is sitting. A protruding fragment in a plug at rest can be out in moments. A deep piece behind lifted pins takes patient work with hooks and spirals. A glued or corroded fragment may mean removing the cylinder and freeing it from behind. Cutting and testing the new key, and any door adjustment, add their own time. The locksmith gives a sense of it after the first look. Broken Key Extraction

How long does a break-in repair take?

It depends on how much gave way. A new lockset and a reinforced strike on a sound frame is a modest job. Bonding a split jamb, sleeving a crushed door edge, reinforcing the hinges and rekeying several cylinders takes longer, and a shattered frame means a securing visit now and a second visit after the carpenter. The locksmith gives a sense of the time once the damage has been seen, and the opening is secured before leaving even when a part has to be ordered. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks

Can all my doors be made to work with one key?

Usually, yes. Where the cylinders accept the same style of key blank, each can be pinned to one new combination, so a single key runs the front, back, side and garage doors. A lock from a different keyway family is brought into the group by exchanging its cylinder for a compatible one in the same finish. During the first walk around the property the locksmith reads every keyway and tells you up front which doors can be keyed alike. Lock Rekeying

I just moved in. Should the new deadbolt be keyed to a new key?

It is a good moment for it. Nobody knows how many copies of a previous owner's key exist, so pinning the new bolt, and the rest of the exterior doors, to one fresh key retires all of them at once. Lock manufacturers list a move as one of the main reasons to rekey. You come away with a known number of keys, each tested in every door it is meant to open. Deadbolt Installation

Can you replace the lock on a sliding patio door or French doors?

Yes. Sliding doors take a replacement mortise hook lock sized to the rail, often with a keyed exterior, and benefit from a secondary foot bolt or a pin through the frames. French doors are secured by treating the inactive leaf properly with flush bolts into the head and sill, then fitting a deadbolt to the active leaf with a strike into that reinforced edge. Both are routine parts of a residential upgrade. Lock Replacement & Upgrade

What exactly is a mortise lock?

It is a lock built as a flat rectangular case that sits inside a pocket cut into the edge of the door, rather than through a round hole bored across it. The case holds the latch, usually a deadbolt, the hub the knob spindle turns, and the springs. On the faces of the door you see the knobs, decorative plates and either a keyhole for a bit key or a round cylinder. Most doors built before the middle of the last century carry one. Should I change my safe's combination even if it still opens fine?

It depends on who still knows the old one. If a bookkeeper, manager or previous owner who had the combination is no longer with the business, resetting it closes that gap even though nothing about the lock itself has failed. A safe that only the current staff have ever known the code to generally does not need changing on that basis alone. Safe Opening & Combination Change

How do I decide between a bigger safe now or upgrading later?

It comes down to how much the amount being stored is likely to grow over the next few years. A safe sized with some room to spare avoids an early repeat visit, while a unit sized exactly for today's needs can be outgrown within a year or two for a growing business. Anchoring and lock work do not change much with size, so the main trade-off is simply the footprint the larger unit takes up in the room. Safe Installation & Servicing

What happens when the patent on my keys runs out?

The mechanical resistance of the cylinder does not change, but blanks may become openly available, so copy control weakens. Manufacturers issue new patented keyways as older ones expire, and the usual answer is to move to the next generation by changing cylinders and keys while keeping the lock bodies. Your locksmith notes the patent term at handover so the date is on the calendar rather than a surprise years later. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks

Do I need my landlord's consent before rekeying my unit?

Read the lease, because that is where the answer lives. Commercial tenancies are governed mostly by the lease itself, and many leases require the tenant to tell the landlord when locks change, to provide a key for emergencies, or to use the landlord's approved locksmith. Doors on the building's master system, such as corridor or service doors, are normally the landlord's to change. Bring the lease to the assessment and the locksmith will sort the doors accordingly. Commercial Rekeying

Do all the doors on my property need to be part of the master system?

No. Some doors, such as a private office or a room with a single regular user, can reasonably stay on their own key outside the hierarchy if there is no real benefit to including them. The assessment is partly about deciding which doors belong in the system and which are simpler left alone, rather than assuming every lock has to join. Master Key System Design

What's the difference between a standalone and a networked system?

A standalone unit is a self-contained reader and lock at one door, holding its own list of credentials, though it can still need a power or network connection to run. A networked system ties several doors to shared management, sometimes through more than one controller, aggregating schedules and combining logs across all of them. The right choice depends on how many doors need controlling and whether the business wants a single place to manage all of them, rather than one being universally better. Access Control Installation

How much force does the door need to open with?

Hardware standards set a maximum, not a target: an exit device is built to release the latch under a firm push, no more than about 15 pounds of force applied at the touchpad or crossbar, roughly the pressure of a light shove rather than a heave. That ceiling covers people who cannot lean hard into a door, so the swing stays open to anyone moving toward it under pressure. Panic & Exit Hardware

Car Keys

How long does a car lockout take once the locksmith arrives?

Confirming identification and looking the car over take a few minutes, and the opening itself is often the shortest part. A wedge-and-reach entry or a picked door cylinder on a common car is a matter of minutes; a frozen lock, a dead car battery or a car with hidden cylinders takes longer. Cutting and programming a replacement key is a separate stage that adds time, and you are given a sense of it before it starts. Car Lockout Service

Which documents count as proof of ownership?

Government photo identification plus the vehicle permit issued by ServiceOntario, the green ownership showing the VIN, is the usual pair. An insurance slip or a lease agreement in your name also works. For a company vehicle, a work order or letter from the fleet manager naming the VIN covers it. If you bought the car days ago, bring the bill of sale and the signed permit until the transfer is done. Car Key Replacement

How is the electronic chip handled during duplication?

Where the transponder supports it, the chip in the working key is read and its data cloned onto a fresh chip, sometimes with vehicle-specific data pulled from the car to help. Where cloning is not supported for that particular vehicle and chip, the locksmith instead connects through the diagnostic port and has the car's own security module enrol a freshly coded chip as a new, independently authorized key. Spare Car Key Duplication

Do all vehicles support passive or proximity entry programming?

No. Passive entry depends on the vehicle being built with the receivers and hardware for it in the first place, not just on the fob being programmed correctly. A vehicle with a basic remote-and-blade key system has no passive entry to program, no matter which fob is registered to it, so the vehicle's own equipment sets the ceiling on what programming can offer.
