Locksmith in Markham, OntarioSolid deadbolts, done properly.

A deadbolt is only as strong as its installation. We bore the holes, set the bolt so it throws fully, back the strike with long screws into the framing, and line everything up so the door locks with two fingers instead of a shoulder.

From the shop

Local locksmiths who explain their work.

When someone asks us about high security locks, we start at the door and not at the catalogue. How far does the bolt travel, what is it entering, how long are the strike screws, is there glass within reach of the turn, and how many keys are out there? The answers decide whether the right step is a rated cylinder, a heavier deadbolt, a reinforced frame or all three.

Help with locks and keys

Every job on this list starts the same way: with a look at the actual door and a conversation about what you need from it. The service is what follows. Browse the groups below to see how we approach lockouts, rekeys, replacements, vehicle keys, safes and access systems.

Lockouts

Lockout Services

Forced doors, frozen locks, lost keys and fragments in the keyway are the daily bread of emergency work. Each has its own page, written without dramatising, so you know what a visit involves before you need one.

Change or rekey

Change or Rekey Locks

Gate locks, building entry locks and shared vestibule doors are part of residential work too, especially for townhouses and small walk-ups. These pages cover hardware that lives outdoors and gets used by many hands.

  1. Hands holding a lock cylinder and a ring of keys above a worn workbench with another cylinder and loose keys. — Lock Rekeying, Markham
Lock RekeyingYour basement tenant has given notice, and a new one arrives on the first. The lock on the separate entrance works perfectly well.
  2. Person holding a silver-colored lock beside an open wooden door with exposed circular holes and a latch at its edge. — Deadbolt Installation, Markham
Deadbolt InstallationThe front door has a handsome lever and a keyed knob, and that is all. Nothing above it.
  3. Detached satin-nickel lever hardware, tubular latch and strike plate on a wooden workbench. — Lock Replacement & Upgrade, Markham
Lock Replacement & UpgradeEvery morning the front door key needs the same little dance: push in, lift, wiggle, turn. It has been getting worse for a year, and this week it took three tries in the cold before the deadbolt finally gave.
  4. Person holding a long door handle and rectangular lock case beside an open wooden door with exposed hardware recesses. — Vintage Mortise Lock Service, Markham
Vintage Mortise Lock ServiceAfter a wet summer the entry door sits lower in its frame. The lock works perfectly when the door is open, but with it shut you have to lift the handle and shoulder the door to get the deadbolt to throw.
  5. Person holding a black door-handle assembly and a latch beside a glazed door with exposed lock openings. — Smart Lock Installation, Markham
Smart Lock InstallationYou have just taken possession of the house and the previous owners handed over a keypad deadbolt with a code nobody wrote down and an app account you cannot get into. It needs to become yours, properly, or be replaced.
  6. Pale blue garden gate with a black lever latch between light stone pillars. — Gate & Building Entry Locks, Markham
Gate & Building Entry LocksSomeone pried at the gate latch overnight, and now the strike plate hangs by one screw and the cylinder spins loose in its housing. The gate still closes, technically, but a firm shoulder is all it would take to open it…
  7. Detached threaded cam lock and mounting washer on a workbench in front of closed mail compartments. — Mailbox Lock Replacement, Markham
Mailbox Lock ReplacementSomeone tried to pry the little door on the mailbox open with a screwdriver, and though the mail sitting inside is untouched, the lock now sits crooked in its hole and the key barely catches when it is turned.

Commercial

Commercial Locks

Running a business means knowing who can get in when you are not there. The commercial services are different ways of answering that: rekey to reset it, master key to organise it, access control to log it, and a safe to protect what matters most inside.

Calls like these

Rugged handheld tablet showing a menu on a workbench beside two key fobs, a laptop, a cable plug and a blue cloth.

Deadbolt Installation

You bought a keypad deadbolt online and pulled the old one off, only to find the hole in the door is a different size and the bolt latch sits at a backset the new kit does not list. The door is now open and the box is on the counter.

Which fix fits?

Your smart lock stopped responding and the app shows nothing. The usual fix

UsuallyCheck power and pairing before replacing anything.

WhyDead batteries and dropped connections are the usual culprits; the mechanical key still gets you in meanwhile.

The sliding patio door has only the little flip latch. The usual fix

UsuallyAdd a keyed patio bolt or a foot lock.

WhyA secondary bolt pins the door to the frame so it cannot be lifted or forced.

You want a lock on the home office door for privacy. The usual fix

UsuallyA keyed or privacy-grade interior lockset.

WhyInterior doors take lighter hardware; we match the rest of the house and the existing bore.

The till drawer has been holding two days of cash because the new shop never got a proper safe, and a locked drawer under the counter is the only thing…The usual fix

UsuallySafe Installation & Servicing

WhyThe lock on a safe is either a mechanical dial built around a wheel pack and gates, set and tested by a trained hand, or an electronic keypad running on batteries, and each has its own service needs.

You jiggle the key a little and the old deadbolt opens even when the cut does not look quite right. The usual fix

UsuallyHigh Security Locks

WhyThe service begins with a conversation about what the door protects and what worries you, then a close look at the door as a whole: the cylinder, the bolt, the strike, the frame, the hinges and any glass nearby.

A key turned up in the parking lot with the shop's name on its fob.The usual fix

UsuallyCommercial Rekeying

WhyFor most business doors, rekeying is the sensible middle path between doing nothing and buying new hardware.

How a visit goes

One key for the whole house is a common request and usually achievable. Cylinders that share the same keyway, the shaped channel the key slides into, can all be pinned to the same new combination, so the front door, back door and garage entry answer to a single key.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.
  1. 1 of 3

    A short conversation first

You tell us what is happening with the door, who has keys and what you would like to be different afterwards. We ask a few questions so we arrive with the right parts.

  2. 2 of 3

A proper look at the door

We check how the door hangs, how the latch meets the strike and what the cylinder is doing before deciding anything. Then we explain what we found in plain words.

  3. 3 of 3

    The work, then a walkthrough

We do the job we agreed, test every key and every position of the lock, tidy up and show you how it works before we leave.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 19%Newer homes

About 19% of homes in Markham were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

During construction many people hold a key: framers, finishers, painters, the sales office. Where homes are new, rekeying the exterior doors to a fresh key is the tidy way to close that chapter, and it takes a single visit.

  • 56%

Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Markham (2021 Census).

In an area with both houses and attached homes, the work varies by the door. A detached house wants all its exterior doors on one key; a suite door wants a cylinder that suits a metal frame and respects building rules. A locksmith carries parts for both.

Things people wonder about

(289) 301-3456

I rent. Can I have my locks rekeyed?

Yes, with your landlord's agreement, which is what the tenancy rules here expect before a tenant changes a lock. Most landlords are glad to consent when a key has gone missing or a former roommate has moved out, and the locksmith will want to hear that the landlord knows and will be holding one of the new keys. The rekey itself runs the same as for an owner, and a short note listing the doors done is handy to pass to the landlord.

My house is older and has a mortise lock. Can that be rekeyed?

Yes. A mortise lock, the kind with a large case set into the edge of the door, uses a threaded cylinder held by a set screw reached from the door's edge. The cylinder unthreads, is pinned like any other and screws back in. Where a very old lock uses a bit key or a lever mechanism instead of a pin cylinder, the locksmith will explain the options, which may include fitting a modern cylinder into the existing case so the door keeps its original hardware.

What is a restricted keyway, and does it change anything?

A restricted or patented keyway is one whose blanks are not sold to the public, so copies can only be cut by an authorized dealer from a record of who is allowed to have them. Rekeying such a cylinder is the same operation inside, but the new keys are cut from controlled blanks and the count is logged. The benefit is that a key cannot be duplicated at a kiosk without your knowledge, which makes the record of who holds one much easier to trust.

What happens when the patent on my keys runs out?

The mechanical resistance of the cylinder does not change, but blanks may become openly available, so copy control weakens. Manufacturers issue new patented keyways as older ones expire, and the usual answer is to move to the next generation by changing cylinders and keys while keeping the lock bodies. Your locksmith notes the patent term at handover so the date is on the calendar rather than a surprise years later.
