You should know what protects your home and why it matters. For households in Markham we grade the hardware already fitted, point out the weak link, whether that is a short strike screw or a cylinder that picks easily, and suggest only the changes that make a real difference. Calls from Cashel are covered too.

Book new keys for your place in Markham

Before a locksmith opens any door in Markham, he asks to see that it is yours: a piece of identification, a lease, an ownership paper, or a neighbour who can vouch. Most people are relieved by the question. The rest of the visit follows the same habit of care: explain each step, leave the frame and finish as we found them, and make sure the keys in your hand are the only ones that work.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 19%Newer homes

About 19% of homes in Markham were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

During construction many people hold a key: framers, finishers, painters, the sales office. Where homes are new, rekeying the exterior doors to a fresh key is the tidy way to close that chapter, and it takes a single visit.

  • 56%

Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Markham (2021 Census).

In an area with both houses and attached homes, the work varies by the door. A detached house wants all its exterior doors on one key; a suite door wants a cylinder that suits a metal frame and respects building rules. A locksmith carries parts for both.

Which fix fits?

You were locking up on the way out when the key broke in the lock. The usual fix

UsuallyBroken Key Extraction

WhyKeys break for a reason, and finding that reason is half the visit.

The lawyer's envelope held two keys for the new house. The usual fix

UsuallyLost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey

WhyRekeying and replacing a lock arrive at the same place by different roads.

The front door has a handsome lever and a keyed knob, and that is all.The usual fix

UsuallyDeadbolt Installation

WhyIf your door already has a knob or lever bore and nothing above it, adding a deadbolt is a boring job in the literal sense.

The driveway gate drags a groove into the gravel every time it swings, and the latch stopped catching weeks ago.The usual fix

UsuallyGate & Building Entry Locks

WhySome building entries add a buzzer, a keypad or an electric strike to the mechanical lock, and any one of those pieces can be the reason a door stops releasing on cue.

Things people wonder about

What lubricant should I use on the lock afterwards?

Whatever the lock's own maker specifies, since cylinders differ: many call for a dry graphite or PTFE spray blown into the keyway and worked in with the key, once or twice a year, while others prohibit graphite and specify their own product instead. General-purpose oils, grease and sprays feel smooth at first but on most cylinders collect dust and clog the pins, which leads back to the sticking that breaks keys. A little goes a long way; too much of any lubricant can also hold moisture.

Does stamping keys 'do not duplicate' stop copies?

It asks; it does not compel. The stamp is a request that a key-cutting counter may or may not honour, and manufacturers say as much. Real control comes from a restricted keyway, whose blanks are issued only through authorised channels against a key card, or simply from knowing how many keys exist and who holds them. A rekey resets that count to a number you chose.

Can I supply my own deadbolt?

Yes. Bring the box, the template and the instructions, and tell the locksmith the model beforehand so the bore and backset can be checked against your door. If the kit turns out to need a larger hole or a different faceplate than the door has, the locksmith adapts the door or suggests a matching model. Hardware bought online sometimes arrives set for a different door thickness, which is a small adjustment on site.

What is a good option for a gate that delivery drivers or a maintenance crew need occasional access to?

A keypad or a lockbox with a rotating code works well there, since access can be shared without handing out a physical key that has to come back later. A weather-rated cylinder with a separate access key is another option if the property already runs on a keyed system. The locksmith can talk through how often the code should change and who on site should know it, so the gate stays convenient without staying open to everyone.

Can the combination or code be changed after installation?

Yes, on both mechanical and electronic locks. A mechanical dial is reset to a new combination by working inside the lock body, while an electronic keypad is simply reprogrammed at the keypad or through its service menu. Changing it after a change in staff, a move, or simply out of caution is routine work rather than anything unusual, and it can be arranged as its own visit.
